This morning, I received my stimulus package. So, how will this change my marginal consumption? Probably not much. As a consumer, I don't respond much to a one-time stimulus of $600.00. I'm cheap and don't buy much that I don't need. I mean, This is about what the government steals from me each month in the form of taxes. If Congress really wants me to spend more, it would let me keep my whole paycheck and stop diluting my savings by printing so much money.
I can live without social security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, traffic cops, and the war in Iraq. In fact, I bet that if we weren't taxed, my neighbors and I could afford to pool together to maintain the roads leading to our apartments. That would be one way to fix the pot holes I swerve to avoid every day. We could even hire our own security guards without worrying if they would taze innocent college students for asking John Kerry a question. Sure, some things would be expensive, but considering the massive amount that is stolen from each of us on a regular basis, it is hard to believe it wouldn't be cheaper to take care of ourselves.
